Navires Malheureux / Unlucky Ships

La poursuite de ma collection de navires de la guerre du Pacifique m'amène cette fois à aborder 2 affrontements malheureux, pour le camp allié : la bataille de la mer de Java, en février 1942, et celle de l'île de Savo, 6 mois plus tard.

The next batch of my collection of ships of the Pacific War bears  this time on 2 unfortunate clashes, for the allied side: the battle of the Java Sea, in February 1942, and that of  Savo Island, 6 months later.

Le croiseur Canberra, de la marine australienne. Faisant partie du groupe Sud, le premier attaqué, il succomba à une gerbe de Longues Lances japonaises.

The cruiser Canberra, of the Australian Navy. As part of the Southern group, the first attacked, she succumbed to a spread of Japanese Long  Lances.

Les croiseurs américains Quincy et Vincennes. Ils composaient le groupe Nord avec l'Astoria, et comme lui, furent coulés par les croiseurs lourds de l'amiral Mikawa.

The American cruisers Quincy and Vincennes. They made up the Northern group with the Astoria, and like it, were sunk by Admiral Mikawa's heavy cruisers.

Les destroyers britanniques Express, Encounter et Electra. Ils formaient à l'origine l'escorte des cuirassés Prince of Wales et Repulse. Si l'Express, endommagé préalablement, ne prit pas part à la bataille de la mer de Java et survécut à cette période, l'Electra y fut coulé,  tout comme l'Encounter .

The British destroyers Express, Encounter and Electra. They originally formed the escort of the battleships Prince of Wales and Repulse. If the Express, damaged beforehand, did not take part in the battle of the Java Sea and survived this period, the Electra was sunk there, as was the Encounter.

Finallement, le croiseur lourd japonais Myoko (et pas Myokyo, oups!) qui, irréparable, finira sabordé par ses vainqueurs au large deSingapour en 1946.

Lastly, the Japanese heavy cruiser Myoko (and not Myokyo, doh!) which, irreparable, will end up scuttled by its victors off the coast of Singapore in 1946.
