Back to the Solomons

Le tout premier livre d’histoire que j’ai lu de ma vie – il m’a été offert à 14 ans pour mon anniversaire par un ami est « Tonnerre sur le Pacifique » du commandant Albert Vulliez. Ecrit dans un style alerte, propre à capturer l’imagination du gamin que j’étais, il m’a fait vivre au rythme des grands combats de cet affrontement titanesque par les surfaces et distances couvertes .  Un des temps forts du livre sont les chapitres consacrés à la campagne des Salomons, riche de rebondissements et de retournements.

The very first history book I read in my life – it was given to me at 14 for my birthday by a friend is “Tonnerre sur le Pacifique” by Commander Albert Vulliez. Written in an alert style, capable of capturing the imagination of the kid that I was, it made me live to the rhythm of the great fights of this confrontation,  titanic by the surfaces and distances covered. One of the highlights of the book are the chapters devoted to the Solomons campaign, rich in twists and turns.

En y revenant, bien des décennies plus tard, dans une optique plus wargamesque, j’ai été frappé par l’intérêt exceptionnel que cette période présente pour le jeu d’histoire avec figurines. Si l’on excepte les 2 affrontements aéronavals de Santa Cruz et des Salomons Orientales – bien plus propres, à mon sens (ce n’est que mon opinion) à un jeu sur carte qu’à l’utilisation de figurines – on y compte une bonne dizaine d’affrontements de surface.

Coming back to it, many decades later, from a more wargamesque perspective, I was struck by the exceptional interest that this period presented for historical games with miniatures. If we exclude the 2 carrier battles of Santa Cruz and the Eastern Solomons – much more suitable, in my opinion (this is only my opinion) for a boardgame than for the use of miniatures – there is a good dozen surface clashes.

Ces affrontements de surface sont originaux par l’équilibre des forces engagées par les 2 camps en bien des occasions (essentiellement des croiseurs et des destroyers, il y a bien sûr des exceptions…), par le paradigme stratégique qui y préside – combats de nuit dictés par la supériorité aérienne US , par la différence des doctrine set des armements : les Etats-Unis, presque jusqu’à la fin, vont privilégier l’affrontement au canon et s’appuyer sur le radar qu’ils maîtrisent de mieux en mieux au fil des combats ; les Japonais vont parier sur leur entraînement au combat de nuit, et sur leurs fameuses « Longues Lances », des torpilles de 24 pouces qui resteront jusqu’en 1943 au moins une surprise tactique pour leurs adversaires.

These surface confrontations are original by the equivalence of forces engaged by both camps on many occasions (essentially cruisers and destroyers, there are of course exceptions…), by the strategic paradigm which governs them – night battles dictated by US air superiority, by the difference in doctrine and armaments: the United States, almost until the end, favored gunnerycombat and relied on radar, which they mastered better and better over the course of the fighting; the Japanese will bet on their training in night combat, and on their famous "Long Lances", 24-inch torpedoes which will remain until 1943 at least a tactical surprise for their opponents.

Au final, 2 camps plus ou moins équivalents par les moyens engagés, se battant selon des doctrines suffisamment différentes pour donner envie de passer de l’un à l’autre. J’ai il y a quelques années réalisé des flottes de la période en utilisant les modèles  au 1/2400^e – exceptionnels par leur qualité – de GHQ  pour l’année 1942 après Savo exclus. Mais les affrontements de 1943 ne manquent pas d’intérêt non plus, aussi ai-je repris quelques navires pour les jouer, en particulier les batailles du golfe de Kula et la baie de l’Impératrice Augusta.

In the end, 2 camps more or less equivalent in the means used, fighting according to sufficiently different doctrines to make you want to switch from one to the other. A few years ago I made fleets of the period using the 1/2400thGHQ  models - exceptional in their quality - for the year 1942 after Savo excluded. But the 1943 battles aren't lacking in interest either, so I picked up a few ships to play them, especially the battles of Kula Gulf and Empress Augusta Bay.
